DEAR ELLIE: MY BEST FRIEND BUYS ME THE WORST GIFTS. SHE HAS GOOD TASTE IN EVERYTHING ELSE. WE'VE EXCHANGED BIRTHDAY GIFTS FOR YEARS, BUT I CHOOSE ITEMS SHE WEARS OR USES OFTEN. FOR SOME REASON, SHE GIVES ME UGLY OR UNUSABLE THINGS, LIKE GOLF EQUIPMENT WHEN I'VE PREVIOUSLY STATED I'M UNINTERESTED IN GOLF. SHE'S GENEROUS AND I'M SURE MEANS WELL, AND IS ALSO BUSY. HOW DO I TELL HER WITHOUT SOUNDING UNGRATEFUL?
